Australia: banking identity foundations, now extending to digital identity
ConnectID used Raidiam to federate bank-held identity across Australia's Big Four banks. Relying parties connected in under an hour. The banking foundations now extend to cross-sector digital identity — same architecture, no rebuild.
Banking identity foundations, now extending to digital identity across sectors
Built for bank-verified digital identity. The same foundations now extend to cross-sector verification. Relying parties connected in under an hour.
The Challenge
Australia needed a bank-led digital identity solution. The Consumer Data Right (CDR) created a framework for data sharing, but identity verification remained fragmented. Australian Payments Plus (AP+) — the organisation behind EFTPOS and the New Payments Platform — needed to build ConnectID: a federated identity verification network using bank-held identity data. The challenges:
- Multiple major banks needed to participate as identity providers
- Identity verification needed to work across sectors (government, telco, finance)
- The system needed to be privacy-preserving — no central identity database
- Trust infrastructure had to support federated identity assertions
- Integration with the existing Consumer Data Right ecosystem was required
The Solution
Raidiam provided the federation infrastructure underpinning ConnectID. Raidiam Connect manages the trust relationships between identity providers (banks), relying parties, and the central trust framework.
Key deliverables:
- Ecosystem control plane managing all participants
- Certificate lifecycle management for identity providers
- Discovery and metadata for relying party integration
- Conformance testing via Raidiam Assure for identity assertion standards
The Numbers
Impact
ConnectID proved the model: build the trust layer once for banking, extend to identity verification across every sector. The same federation model that governs API ecosystems now governs identity verification — proving the “one control plane” vision across different trust use cases.
By enabling Australians to verify their identity using existing bank credentials, ConnectID eliminates the need to repeatedly share identity documents — reducing data breach risk, accelerating onboarding, and giving consumers control over their personal information. The banking identity foundations are now the platform for cross-sector expansion.

Our clients include central banks, payment scheme operators, and globally systemically important financial institutions. We don't build point solutions. We operate the ecosystem control plane that the world's financial system depends on. They built once. They keep expanding.
Raidiam is a founding contributor to OpenID Federation and actively shapes the standards that define how digital trust ecosystems work globally. OpenID Federation is the standard. Raidiam Connect is the ecosystem control plane that makes it work at national scale — and lets it expand to whatever comes next.
